Economy and financial system of Armenia: current challenges

The growth rate of Armenia's GDP is slowing down (for 9 months of 2023 7.4% y/y compared to 12.7% in 2022), but still remains one of the highest among the CIS countries (second only to Tajikistan with an increase of 8.3%). How long will rapid GDP growth in Armenia last? Armenian banks earned record profits in 2022-2023, but the banking system remains, in the opinion of many, a bottleneck for economic development.

Armenia as a financial hub: will Armenia become the Switzerland of the Caucasus?

The geopolitical situation that has developed after 2022 has led to a change in the geography of capital flows. Traditional jurisdictions have become unacceptable or inaccessible for many investors, which has led to the need for the formation of new financial hubs. Yerevan, along with Almaty, has a chance to become one of these new financial centers for the CIS countries. Will it be possible to use this chance, and what is the strategy for the international development of Armenian brokerage companies?

Invited to participate:

• Armenian brokerage companies, asset managers

Irina Bugdaeva, Director of Development, Meta-X Markets

Local securities market of Armenia: can we expect a boom in bond placements and IPOs?

In 2023, the volume of the domestic corporate bond market in Armenia grew by 26% and came close to the USD 1 billion mark. The volume of the government bond market grew by 19% and exceeded $4.5 billion. The first IPO in many years took place - the telecommunications giant Telecom Armenia (TEAM) brought its shares to the stock exchange. A program has been launched to subsidize interest rates on bonds for companies in the non-financial sector, which may attract new issuers to the market.

Brave new “crypto world”: the role of cryptocurrencies in the financial system, development of the DFA (digital financial assets) market

Bitcoin is no longer as volatile as it was several years ago, and in 2023 it has become an excellent investment tool, showing a 2.5-fold increase. Stablecoins (USDT, USDC and others) have become a convenient tool for international payments. In a number of countries, the development of digital financial assets markets (digital financial assets) - analogues of traditional financial instruments (shares, bonds, structured notes) carried out on blockchain platforms is taking place. DFAs differ from traditional financial instruments in their maximum flexibility and speed of issuance.

What impact will this have going forward and how will financial markets change in the coming years?
